Swami Sri Yukteswar, guru of Paramhansa Yogananda, described the cyclic course of the evolution of human consciousness through the ages, called yugas in the ancient Vedic writings. This 8½" x 11" - two page (four sides) booklet shows landmark historical events, people and cultures are plotted on the spiral timeline of the ages from the end of the last ice age to the present day and related to the precession of the equinoxes.
On the back the characteristics of each age are explained: Dwapara Yuga the spiritual age, Treta Yuga the mental age, Dwapara Yuga the age of energy that the earth is now entering, and the Kali Yuga the dark age of material consciousness we are struggling to leave behind. These concepts are based on the writings of Swami Sri Yukteswar, Paramhansa Yogananda, Nayaswami Kriyananda and the traditions of many cultures handed down from ancient times.
The chart also includes guide to the sequence of historical developments seen in the light of the yugas. This way of looking at the course of human development literally turns the conventional view of history on its head; the development of agriculture, writing, and technology are recognized not as linear advancements but as adaptations to changing global consciousness from one yuga age to the next through the cycle.
Inside is a brief introduction to the yuga cycles and some examples of symmetry between events of the descending arc of the cycle and those of the corresponding arc of ascending consciousness.
David (Byasa) Steinmetz teaches about yugas at the Ananda College of Living Wisdom and is co-author of The Yugas.
