"Pilgrims are not tourists. They have come, quietly and humbly, to seek the holy and enter more deeply into God's Blessedness. The Heaters have found this stillness for themselves and here set out to share its essentials with men and women who earnestly seek God."
—Sister Wendy Beckett, author and host of the PBS program The Saints with Sister Wendy
"The Pilgrim's Italy is a joyous addition to the growing literature of soulful travel guides. I recommend it to anyone who wants to turn his or her travels into a sacred journey."
—Phil Cousineau, author of The Art of Pilgrimage and The Book of Roads
"This book is a treasure of fascinating spiritual practice for a world that needs more saints. It invites us all to embrace that call, and gives us some guidance along the way."
—Brother Wayne Teasdale, author of The Mystic Heart
"A lovely guide for the traveler drawn to the spiritual side of Italy."
—James O'Reilly, editor of Travelers' Tales Tuscany
"The saints' presence is very much alive, today, at these shrines. James and Colleen Heater show us how truly to receive the saints' blessings, by experiencing for ourselves their living presence."
—J. Donald Walters, author of Meditation for Starters
"James and Colleen Heater offer seekers of all faiths a compelling and comprehensive guide to both the inner and outer realms of Italy's great spiritual sites."
—Deborah Willoughby, Editor, Yoga International
"What an inspiring book! Although there are a few spiritually oriented travel books, none as clearly address how truth seekers can attune inwardly to the sacred sites in order to experience them on the deepest levels.
—Norman Snitkin, East West Bookshop of Seattle
"Saints and mystics through the centuries have been living examples of holiness, yet they were not born saints. They attained a life of perfection through prayer, meditation and goodwill. The Pilgrim's Italy will help pilgrims learn more about the saints they venerate, and how to make better use of pilgrimage, by encouraging silence and meditation on the lives and teachings of the saints."
—Maximilian Mizzi, O.F.M. Conv. Delegate General for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue
"This interesting and handy guide will be my faithful companion as I walk in the footsteps of the saints of Italy."
—Justin Epstein, Assoc. Minister, Unity Center of New York. T.V. Host Practical Spirituality with Justin Epstein
About J.T. & Colleen Heater
James and Colleen Heater have combined their interest in the lives of the saints and their love of travel to create a unique series of spiritual travel guides. As longtime practitioners of yoga, the Heaters teach classes on meditation and inspirational music as members of a spiritual community in Northern California. Their honeymoon to Italy in 1998 evolved into a journey of pilgrimage and sparked the idea for writing travel guides to sacred destinations. Since then they have written and published pilgrimage guides to Italy and France, with plans for adding Spain and India to the collection.
Colleen's professional background includes working as a licensed marriage and family therapist, specializing in addiction and codependency, while offering the opportunity for spiritual renewal to her clients. Colleen has lived and traveled throughout Europe for both pleasure and pilgrimage, and is currently devoting her time to writing and promotion for Inner Travel Books.
James, a licensed architect, practices in both religious and secular design, with projects in America, Europe and India. His background in meditation and music—including being an accomplished guitarist—has prepared him to understand the subtle energies of some of the holiest shrines in Europe and Asia. With this base of knowledge, he has led guided tours to sacred places in the United States and Italy.
