About Cardamom Essential Oil
Cardamom essential oil has long been used for its carminative or anti-flatulent properties; it is also indicated for dyspepsia, colic, stomach acidity and nausea, including the nausea brought on by pregnancy. Its tonic digestive properties extend to its use as a protective agent against parasites, dysentery and diarrhea. The warming, antiseptic and camphorous qualities of cardamom lend themselves to use in easing cough, congestion and pulmonary infections. Additionally, cardamom is a natural remedy for impotence and low sexual response, and is also employed to help induce menstrual cycles and to soften the distress of PMS.
Cardamom essential oil has a soothing, uplifting emotional affect. It exerts a fortifying influence on mental functioning, reducing drowsiness and improving concentration. Renowned for its grounding powers, this member of the ginger family has a gentle character, making it an ideal warming addition to massage oil blends and suitable for most skin types.
How to Use Cardamom Oil
Cardamom essential oil can be applied topically (always diluted), as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation, or used with a diffuser.
Apply a few drops of cardamom oil diluted with sesame oil as a compress over the abdominal area to relieve nausea, bloating and indigestion.
Two drops in an aromatic bath soothes digestive upset and uplifts and refreshes the mind.
Cardamom oil blended with sweet almond oil works as a warming tonic and can be used as a sensual massage oil.
For lung congestion, use a few drops of cardamom essential oil plus two drops of thyme oil in steam therapy.
Diffuse cardamom oil to calm an upset stomach and to ease symptoms in the beginning stages of cough and respiratory discomfort.
Cardamom Oil Recipes:
Abdominal cramping formula: 4 drops angelica oil, 6 drops clary sage oil, 4 drops cardamom, 4 drops roman chamomile oil in a 30 ml marula oil or other carrier oil.
Aphrodisiac blend: 4 drops jasmine oil, 4 drops sandalwood, 2 drops rose oil, 2 drops cardamom in a 15 ml marula oil or other carrier oil.

Ethnobotanics: Several small farmers living in the hilly regions of Kerala, India are engaged in growing cardamom in their backyards. Despite their having been grown organically, the lack of collection centers and organized markets for these growers' products means that this cardamom oil cannot currently be certified as organic.
