A century after the birth of Paramahansa Yogananda, he has come to be recognized as one of the preeminent spiritual figures of our time, whose life and teachings are a source of light and inspiration for Truth-seekers all over the world.
This calendar is full of beautiful and touching photos from the life of Paramhansa Yogananda. Several are rare and hard to find. Cut them out and frame them, or simply hang the calendar and change the photo at your leisure.
Born in Gorakhpur, India, on January 5, 1893, Paramhansa Yogananda came to the Untied states in 1920 as India's delegate to an international congress of religious leaders. His subsequent lectures and classes in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia were enthusiastically received and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour—introducing the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga to capacity audiences in many of the largest halls in the country. After arriving in Los Angeles he established there in early 1925 an international headquarters for his society, Self-realization Fellowship.
Over the next three decades Paramhansaji lectured extensively in major cities throughout the United States and abroad. In his later years he withdrew somewhat from public lecturing, devoting himself rather to building an enduring foundation for his spiritual and humanitarian work. He began conducting smaller classes for serious students of his teaching and guided the compilation, from his lectures and writings, of a comprehensive series of lessons for home study. This period also saw the creation of temples, centers, and meditation groups around the world and the writing of books that would carry his message to future generations—including his Autobiography of a Yogi, widely regarded as a modern spiritual classic. Today, the worldwide work he began continues under the direction of one of his earliest and closest disciples, Sri Daya Mata, president of Self-Realization Fellowship since 1955.
This special-edition calendar, commemorating Sri Yogananda's centennial, highlights many events and dates of biographical and historical interest. Though by no means a complete chronology—for example, in most cases only the first lecture series he gave in a particular city is recorded here—these brief notes nevertheless afford a fascinating glimpse of the life and work of this great world teacher.
The profound and far-reaching influences of Paramhansa Yogananda and his teachings is suggested in these words of tribute from a newspaper articles published shortly after his passing: "Yogananda made an outstanding cultural and spiritual contribution in furthering the cause of better understanding between East and West. He combined in a conspicuous degree the spiritual idealism of India with practical activity of the West. The two found in him a blend, enabling him to accomplish a work of amazing proportions in the course of no more than three brief decades. The centers he established, the great numbers he inspired to nobler living, and the ideals he planted in the common consciousness of humanity will ever remain a monument to his notable achievement."
